Is it possible to cultivate classroom inclusivity with one small activity?
As healthcare providers, and parents to children with multiple disabilities, we believe the answer is a resounding yes.
After launching the internationally-acclaimed bestseller, True Hues Color Wheel: An Activity to Better Understand Autism, creators Dr. Lisa Peña and Stephanie Hanrahan, RN, knew true inclusivity could only be achieved if nondisabled peers were also exposed to the beauty and benefits of autism.
True Hues Color Wheel: Classroom Edition is a hands-on activity that introduces students to six domains of autism. After reading a brief description, students will review examples of how that domain impacts two autistic individuals in differing ways. Through classroom discussion, they will then determine a variety of support strategies while coloring their wheel to reflect the many variations of autism. At the end of the activity, the two color wheels will look entirely different, just like each person with autism.
This activity comes with a teacher guide, workbook, and fully customizable slide presentation to support visual learners. It also meets many of the educational state requirements such as compare/contrast, social/emotional learning, deductive reasoning and more.
Whether you have a child with autism in your class, or are simply seeking information about neurodiversity so that you can implement a more inclusive learning environment, the True Hues Color Wheel: Classroom Edition will help promote awareness, education, and inclusion for children of all abilities.
